Well, yes and no (and maybe). Yes, you’re right that ‘newbie’ is a usual spelling (along with n00b and noob) and ‘newby’ isn’t. But if internet coinages are supposed to conform to strict orthography, what’s the point?
No, of course not, because a real newbie doesn’t even know how to spell ‘newbie.’
Maybe the alternate spelling provides the potential for branding. Does that sound plausible? Or maybe I should just change it right away to newbies guide …
